Who must file
Every entity with a USDOT number must update every two years — even if nothing changed, you stopped interstate operations, or you’re no longer in business and didn’t tell FMCSA. You also must update within 30 days of a name, business-form or address change. Updating is free.
Penalties for missing it
FMCSA: failure to complete a biennial update will result in deactivation of your USDOT number and may result in civil penalties of up to $1,000 per day, not to exceed $10,000.
How to file
Use the official FMCSA instructions at fmcsa.dot.gov/registration/updating-your-registration (FMCSA recommends submitting through ask.fmcsa.dot.gov over mail). It’s free — you don’t need to pay a third party.
Get a reminder before it’s due
Enter your USDOT number to see your UCR, IFTA, MCS-150 and 2290 dates, then sign up for email reminders (about $5/mo).
