Who must file
Carriers licensed under IFTA — generally qualified motor vehicles running in two or more member jurisdictions — file one quarterly return with their base state/province covering all miles and fuel. You must file every quarter even if you had no miles (a zero return).
Penalties for missing it
Base-state agencies publish the IFTA late penalty as $50 or 10% of the net tax due, whichever is greater, plus interest on unpaid tax (e.g., Virginia DMV, South Carolina DMV, Colorado DOR). Not filing can lead to suspension or revocation of your IFTA license and decals (SC DMV).
How to file
You file with your base jurisdiction (usually your state’s DMV or revenue department), most offer online filing. Find your jurisdiction’s contact and portal through IFTA, Inc.: iftach.org/Carriers.
Get a reminder before it’s due
Enter your USDOT number to see your UCR, IFTA, MCS-150 and 2290 dates, then sign up for email reminders (about $5/mo).
